This is not a blog. This is not a journal. But it is something.
2023/12/08. Hey! I had a blog here and everything. Sadly, it was ancient, and finally some bad actor ran an injection attack, so I had to remove it. Now I'm thinking of what to do - hopefully I still have the decade or so of posts in the database, but I can't have the old php blog software up sincec it is compromised. If you are here, you are probably looking for fighting game events that I know about in Tokyo.
2005/05/20. On Friday, I successfully defended my PhD thesis at Columbia University. Oh yeah.
2004/10/23 My best friends Ron and Michelle got married at Princeton University October 23rd, 2004. I have the pictures here to prove it.
2004/08/06. Back from my trip to Washington state, where I visited the family.
2004/07/15. I haven't had much interesting to talk about lately, but I did today get my Treo 600 phone working as a modem on my linux Fedora Core 2 install. If you are interested, check out the amazingly simple things I had to do to get my Treo 600 working as a modem on my Fedora Core 2 linux install.
2004/04/22 Asobi Seksu played at Lounge 13 on Thursday, and I went to check them out. I really, really recommend them. Their CD should be out soonish in NY area stores, but at least hit their website, check out their MP3s, and then go see them play.
2004/04/17. We Are Scientists at the Knitting Factory. How cool is that?
2004/04/14. Caught Say Hi To Your Mom at the Mercury Lounge. It was a great show. They are a great band. Had dinner at Waikiki Wally's (a really kitschy Tiki place, sister restaurant to Lucky Cheng's) before that. Really cute ambiance, and surprisingly good food.
2004/04/09 Six years in the city, and this is the first time I've ever been to the annual Macy's Flower Show. Pretty amazing actually.
2004/04/04 Rockin' Roller Skate at OfficeOps in Brooklyn was just a blast. Take 4 bands, put them in a cage, give the audience roller skates, add beer and stir. Of course, since Bishop Allen was one of the bands, I thought I should lace up some skates and head out there.
2004/03/23 I went to check out the Japanese Girls SAMURAI US tour when it came to New York, and had a great time. 4 Japanese girl bands ranging from "the new breed of Japanese noise" to a "Ukulele playing duo". I really, really liked Petty Booka, a country hawaiian ukelele pop duo. They sounded just beautiful, and were funny to boot. Check them out. I also like Noodles a lot. No pictures though (didn't have a camera with me.)
2004/03/04 I went down to Arlene's Grocery to check out Wussy (read about them in Japion) and
also enjoyed Impostor
Syndrome. Took a few pictures.
2/13/2004 Updated LogTracker with a view of URIs that have been recently accessed.
I went down to Philly to see Bishop Allen on the start of their
Support the Thunder tour. Bishop Allen are totally awesome - you must go and see them when they play near you. It is a moral imperative.
1/1/2004 Added JNLP launching and a huge GUI overhaul to the
GMAOServer - you can check it out on the gateio login.
11/13/2003 Hunkabutta.com
has some really cool pics from Japan. I like it. Oh, and happy
birthday to me. 29 years young.
11/1/2003 Pictures from Halloween 2003, "A Very Strongbad Halloween".
9/16/2003 Tuesday, at the Bowery Ballroom. I caught
Bishop Allen down at the Bowery Ballroom with Erin McKeown. Bishop Allen was really good, and I liked Erin McKeown as well. But everyone should catch Bishop Allen. They rock. I even got my T-shirt signed by Bonnie and Christian. Yay!
8/27/2003. From Friday, 8/22/2003 until Sunday, 8/24/2003 I
went on a road trip with some friends to New England. We hit
Mystic, Newport, Boston, and Glouster. It was loads of fun. I
didn't even get sunburned.
8/5/2003. I went to Japan in July of 2003 for a conference,
and some vacation. Here are lots of pictures.
5/31/2003. I went down to the Tank on 42nd street, and saw
Bishop Allen in concert. Bishop Allen is really great - Ron sent me a link from their NPR interview, and I've been listening to the album ever since it arrived...
2/1/2003. We had a Karaoke Party! Man, that new Japas over at 38th is pretty cool!
1/23/2003.
Nerd Night v1.0, over at Steve's place.
1/14/2003. There used to be a group called UsagiPop, a long time
ago. I really liked their stuff. Now, there is a group called
Young Alive in Love
that is getting started, with the same front-man (I think.) Anyway,
I'm hopeful.
12/14/2002. My younger sister graduates from SMU with a
Bachelor of Fine Arts in pottery. She had her first solo show, and
then was in the graduation ceremony.
12/06/2002. No pictures. I defended my thesis proposal:
"Identifying Similarity in Multilingual Text: Analysis for
Summarization." I can finally get back to living life a little. :)
10/31/2002. Halloween came and went. The Sable's put on a fun
party, as usual.
10/24/2002. Went to see the
Girlyman band show at the Living Room. They're a good group.
You should check them out. I command it.
10/7/2002. I spent the whole weekend cleaning up the apartment, throwing out old furniture and stuff. I've got some pictures of the new, improved living room up on my fugu server. I'll set up the nifty image gallery script that adapted from the web on fugutabetai.com at some point too. Just not now. :)
9/21/2002 - Went down to Chinatown with Y.I. and her family for a nice dim sum brunch, and ice cream afterwards. Otherwise, just busy. working. busy.
9/10/2002 - Back in New York. Back at Work.
Some indeterminate time... Played BBall back at SMU in Dallas a
few times. Lots of fun to be had.
9/1/2002 - Alana and Thon got up and ran at 8:00am. I didn't go;
I sprained my ankle playing basketball last week. At about noon
we went out to get brunch at Las Manitas Avenue Cafe, my sister's
favorite place downtown. It's a mexican place. I got a Plato de
Churrizo, which is basically refreid beans, and churrizo with egg.
Put all that stuff in a tortilla, and it is some pretty good eating.
Of course, it didn't feel right having that for breakfast, but
still...
In the afternoon, we went to Barton Springs. It's a part of the
Austin city parks, basically a few blocks from downtown Austin. It's
a natural spring that flows up from limestone which Austin built a
nice little park around. The water is always a chilly 68 degrees, so
it's pretty cool to go out there on a hot day and relax on the grass,
popping in and out of the water. Of course, it was pretty crowded
since a lot of Austin seemed to have had the same idea that we did...
For dinner, we went to Mangia, which has the best pizza in
Austin, according to my sister. They make a Chicago style deep dish
pizza there. The owner is a die-hard runner, and wanted to have a
"healthy" pizza, so he created a deep dish spinach double stuffed
pizza on whole wheat bread. That is what Alana and Thon ordered,
while Dad and I got a double stuffed mushroom, smoked bacon and
pineapple pizza on a white crust. It was actually very good.
Afterwards, we headed home, and mom and dad took the Allante back to
Dallas. Thon, Alana and I headed out to a nearby park with a view of
"bat bridge." This is a bridge that has tens of thousands of bats
living under it, and at sunset, the bats come out and fly around. We
took a seat on a dock near the UT-owned boat house, and settled down
to watch. Unfortunately, bat season is just about coming to an end -
the bats are migratory and head to Mexico for the winter, and there
were not too many out for us to see. On the way back, we stopped at
Amy's Ice Cream again, and I got another chocolate (dark chocolate
this time) with strawberries and hot fudge, "sundae style" (so the
strawberries weren't pounded in to the ice cream.) That improved it,
but still it wasn't up to Halo Pub standards.
At home, we watched a few episodes of the Simpsons from the newly
acquired season 2 DVD that Thon picked up, and then played a game of
scrabble to the Director's cut of Aliens (which Alana has amazingly,
never seen before.) I got completely trounced by both Thon and Alana,
and we finished off the movie. I'll have to play more scrabble...
8/31/2002 - Drove down to Austin today. It took
about 4 and a half hours - going the speed limit the whole way.
Which is how I usually drive. Anyway, came out here to visit my
sister and her boyfriend. They took us to a really nice dinner.
The food wasn't so amazing - standard tourist spot type fare - but the
view was just great. The place was called "Oasis", and it was up on
the top of a hill overlooking Lake Travis. We got a great view of the
sunset. Highly recommended.
After dinner we met up with dad, and went down to Amy's ice
cream. It was really good, but not as good as Halo Pub.
8/27/2002 - I made it to Dallas, and celebrated my mom's birthday.
Now I'm camped out at the gate io app trying to catch up on email and
get some work done. I located the interview NPR did with
Puffy AmiYumi (thanks Adam!)
8/24/2002 - I went to
Evan and Veronica's wedding today. It was out at a park in
New Jersey, and was a lot of fun. I would have loved to have stayed
for more of the merriment, but I had to catch a plane to Dallas...
8/23/2002 - Been working hard all week. I have nothing
interesting to show, and not much to say. Except I've eaten all
the food in my apartment, including some old ramen. I have a bit
of campbell's soup, so maybe I'll start in on that - but I've
never been a big soup fan.
8/16/2002 - Y.I. came over last night, and we cooked up some
Niku Jyaga. A nice break from all the Curry Rice I've been having
lately. :)
8/12/2002 - Just got back from Las Vegas. That is an expensive
city.
I've got some pictures up over here. Maybe. I think I'll be eating
lots of curry rice - at least until my next paycheck...
8/06/2002 - Y.I. and I went shopping, and cooked up a big pot
of Curry Rice (hot, not mild) with some beef. I love Japanese
curry rice. It's one of my favorite foods. It was good too - and
now I have like 4 days worth of curry. At least.
8/03/2002 - Met up with Y.I. for a video (As Good As It Gets)
and dinner. We ate at
Max SoHa
which is usually pretty good. Then we headed down to
Showman's
for some drinks and jazz. Pretty fun evening, all told.
7/28/2002 - Met some friends at Fort Tryon park near the
Cloisters for a picnic. I brought the proverbial bucket of
KFC chicken. While walking
through the park, I noticed a cute little cafe that I've put on my
list of places to try called
The New Leaf Cafe. I
haven't had good luck with picnics - it was really hot and humid,
and at the previous picnic I was on (4th of July 2002) in Central
Park it was also amazingly, meltingly hot.
7/27/2002 - Brunch downtown at SoHo with Y.I. at a place I've
been meaning to try,
The Mercer
Kitchen. Brunch has been one of my favorite meals lately, and
I've been frequenting Kitchenette Uptown, so it was nice to
compare. I had a great pancakes with banannas and mixed berries
dish. Really fresh, tasty fruit. Afterwards, we checked out the
new Apple store (pretty cool!) and did some shopping in the area. I
picked up a new candle from Portico and some clothes on sale from
Bananna Republic...
7/24/2002 Evening - Went downtown to meet Benkei and friends.
Had dinner at
Cafeteria.
Looking over the menu, I just had to get the Fried Chicken and
Waffles. I love breakfast. I'm a big fan of fried chicken. Why
not put them together? Before eating, I took a picture of a cute
blue-haired girl. I asked before hand, just because you know, it
would be strange otherwise. Not like it wasn't strange enough as it
was. Anyway, when I took the picture she said that she had made a
face, but I said that was fine, since I didn't want to make her feel
like I was hitting on her or anything. As I left, her friend said
"Oh great, now you're gonna be in some freak magazine."
So, I'll try to get her picture up here if I ever develop it.
7/24/2002 Morning - Went running this morning with Benkei. Man, that's
one fast 900 year old monk. Anyway, ran the Central Park
reservoir loop, which is always a tough run. It's about 3.5 miles
I guess, and there are like, hills and stuff. The treadmills are
just so much easier to run on...
